This five-stop driving itinerary leads from Athens into the heart of mainland Greece and finishes on the northern Aegean coast, combining classical archaeology, dramatic mountain monasteries and vibrant northern Greek culture. Begin with several nights in Athens to explore the Acropolis, archaeological museums and the atmospheric Plaka neighbourhood. From there, drive northwest to Delphi, once considered the centre of the ancient world: wander the Temple of Apollo, view the sanctuary terraces set against sweeping mountain vistas, and enjoy relaxed evenings in a traditional taverna. Continue to Kalabaka, the gateway to the extraordinary Meteora rock formations; spend time visiting cliff-top monasteries, hiking ridge trails and photographing surreal sunset light. Next, head east to Thessaloniki, a lively port city whose Byzantine monuments, waterfront promenade and thriving food scene reward slower exploration. Conclude with a couple of nights in Kavala on the Aegean shore — a graceful seaside town with Ottoman-era fortifications, salted fish cuisine and easy access to nearby beaches or island ferries.
