This five-stop driving itinerary takes you from Reykjavík across Iceland’s dramatic south coast and up through the eastern fjords to the otherworldly landscapes around Lake Mývatn. Begin with a multi-night stay in Reykjavík to explore museums, contemporary architecture and nearby geothermal sites like the Blue Lagoon (or reserve it for the return). Drive the south coast to Vík, a perfect base for black sand beaches, basalt sea stacks and waterfalls such as Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Continue eastward to Höfn — gateway to Vatnajökull National Park and the glacier-fed lagoons of Jökulsárlón and Fjallsárlón — where glacier views and boat excursions are highlights. Travel through the scenic, winding roads of the East Fjords and overnight in Egilsstaðir to sample remote coastal villages, dramatic cliffs and tranquil fjord scenery. Conclude with several nights around Lake Mývatn and its geothermal fields, pseudocraters, lava formations and abundant birdlife; there are warm baths to soothe tired legs and excellent vantage points for northern lights in season. Each planned driving leg is a comfortable day’s journey of at least two hours, allowing time for scenic stops, short hikes and photography.
